Item Description
Original Item. Only One Available. This is a fantastic Civil War or Early Indians Wars M1872 Federal Chasseur Pattern Kepi that features fabric of very fine blue wool broadcloth. Due to the construction, this example could go either way. The handsewn construction and polished cotton lining point to this being a Civil War example, but it exhibits many characteristics of an M1872 as well. The crown stands nearly 3” high at the front, 4¼” at the rear seam and the top is 5 ¼” in diameter, stiffened with a pasteboard beneath the lining. The cap's interior is lined with lovely brown/gray cotton and is still mostly intact. The original chinstrap is held in place by two New York “Excelsior” buttons. The crown of the kepi has a gorgeous Civil War style faux-embroidered Artillery badge, and the crown has a number of great period stitch repairs. It’s very possible that this example began life in the Civil War and saw use through the Indian Wars.
There is no manufacturer’s information in the kepi, if there ever was in the first place. This is a really tremendous example that would do well with continuous research into its construction. The visor and chinstrap have held up well but do have some wear to the leather. This is a great example with many Civil War characteristics. The size is roughly 6¾.
There is some mothing in spots on the crown and around the kepi, but it displays very well. A phenomenal example, ready for further research and display.
