Original Item. Only One Available. This is a genuine U.S. Civil War Federal Model 1851 Regulation eagle sword belt plate retaining its separate original catch and complete silvered wreath. The two pieces continue to fit together correctly, while the plate’s well defined eagle device and dark, age-established patina give it the appearance expected of an extensively handled period example.

The face displays a detailed Federal eagle with a shield upon its breast, arrows and an olive branch in its talons, and a ribbon above bearing the national motto. A one piece nickel silver wreath surrounds the lower part of the design and terminates beneath the eagle’s wings. The catch still attaches to the buckle and fits into it perfectly, which will look great for display. There are no markings on either piece of the buckle.

The face exhibits well defined edges and an evenly worn surface. Most of the original bright finish has darkened considerably with age, leaving a heavy patina across the eagle, wreath, and surrounding field. The reverse has an integral tongue that engages the separate catch. The original catch remains present, attaches securely to the buckle, and fits as intended. This allows the complete two piece assembly to be displayed together.

The rectangular eagle sword belt plate was introduced in 1851 for personnel authorized to carry swords. It is strongly associated with Federal officers during the Civil War, although versions of the pattern were also used by enlisted cavalrymen, artillerymen, and certain infantry NCOs. Officers generally purchased their own equipment, resulting in variations in manufacture, detail, wreath construction, and finish among surviving examples.

The retention of the complete nickel silver wreath and corresponding catch is central to the collector interest of this example. It would be appropriate for a collection of Federal accoutrements, Civil War sword belts, or regulation U.S. Army equipment.
