  • Original Item: Only One Available. The Colt "Pocket Percussion" Model 1849 revolvers in .31cal are essentially scaled down versions of the larger Navy Model 1851 in .36cal, and were developed concurrently. The serial Number 211337 can be found on the grip, trigger guard, frame, and cylinder, which indicates the year of manufacture as 1862, meaning this Colt revolver falls right into the U.S. Civil War. The barrel however has serial number 332536, which was produced in 1873, a post-war arsenal replacement.

Six shot percussion, .31 caliber with a short 4" barrel, most numbers matching. The revolver is worn overall, but there is still the frame marking of  COLT'S PATENT. The Colt address is still well marked in a line across the top of the octagonal barrel -

    ADDRESS.COL. SAML COLT NEW-YORK U.S. AMERICA.

The condition is nice but the Stage Coach scene on the cylinder is gone. The blue finish is most likely an arsenal rework and the right side of the frame shows being held in a vice, probably during base workshop repairs. Trigger Guard and back strap of matured brass. The walnut grips are in good shape, with a lovely color and the expected patina of age. They still have a good amount of the original "Piano Varnish" finish that was applied to these at the factory. The revolver cycles, however it does have some issues and is finicky after such a long time in service.

The BEST thing going from this revolver is the engraving on the brass back strap that says:

    Lieut. W. Grimes U.S. ARMY.

Regretfully no unit is mentioned, but it really adds to the revolver and makes it an excellent research opportunity. Most often Officers had the revolver so marked as to discourage theft, and this was not intended as any kind of presentation.

Most attractive and ready to display!
