Original U.S. Civil War New York Depot Model 1858 Smooth Side Canteen with Sling

Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. This is an extremely nice, rare example of a complete service-worn Model 1858 “Smooth Side” Canteen from the American Civil War. Prior to 1858 canteens were made of wood or tin and came in a variety of forms and sizes. The two most prominent being the "barrel-type" made of wood with side slats like a barrel, and the "cheesebox-type" made of wood with a single wrap around side. Tin water bottles, similar to that used by the British Army, were also used, particularly towards the end of the 18th century.

The model 1858 canteen was the most popular canteen of the Civil War period. Canteen measures approximately 8.5" in diameter. It is missing its cover. The tin body of the canteen is very good, including the spout. All three sling loops, the spout, stopper and chain are all present. This is a New York Depot canteen as it has the iron chain connecting the stopper ring to one of the side strap brackets. The stopper is original (rare!). The sling appears to have been tied off after a break. The pewter spout appears to have been attached at a bit of an angle, and may have been a period depot replacement. A very nice rare canteen from the American Civil War!
