Original Item: Only One Available. Here is a handsome Civil War specimen of the Model 1858 Smooth Side or Flat Back pattern tin canteen offered in good condition.
The model 1858 canteen was the most popular canteen of the Civil War period. Canteen measures approximately 7 3/4" in diameter. It is covered in grey/brown wool. The cover is complete and in good condition with typical stains, small holes and wear, but overall solid. The tin body of the canteen is excellent, including the spout. All three sling loops, the spout, stopper and chain are all present. This is a New York Depot canteen as it has the iron chain connecting the stopper ring to one of the side strap brackets. Stopper is original (rare!). A very nice rare canteen from the American Civil War!
