Original Item. One-of-a-Kind. This is a tremendously preserved Confederate Richmond Depot style tin drum canteen with its original leather carrying strap. The canteen came to us with a great deal of research already done. The concaved side of the canteen is very lightly etched with the name Roach along with Co. G. According to their research, there were six men with the last name Roach serving in a Company G, all in the 20th Mississippi Infantry. This canteen would do very well with additional research!
The canteen measures roughly 6¼” in diameter, 2” wide, with three small posts for attachment of the carrying strap. All parts are nicely soldered together. The back of the canteen is flat and the front side is concave with three minor dents from use. There is a 1” tall spout soldered to the top with an old cork still in the mouth, although we can’t say whether this is the original cork. The original strap is retained, and it has survived extraordinarily well, measuring roughly 55” in length, with a metal adjustment buckle hand-sewn at one end.
This type of canteen appears to be a Richmond Depot style canteen, which saw used by many Confederate regiments of the Civil War. Examples of similar tin drum canteens can be found in the book “Civil War Canteens” by Sylvia & O’Donnell.
This is a tremendous Confederate canteen with much research already done. Comes ready for further research and display.
