Original Item: Only One Available. This is a genuine Pattern 1861 pattern Federal issue leather cartridge box for .58 caliber Minié ball cartridges. Overall leather condition is good but worn, with the finish flaking in places and some dry rot. The tab hole is worn, and has a small tear. It can probably fit around the bottom stud, but we did not want to further damage it so we did not try
The rear of the box still has both belt loops intact, as well as the loops for the shoulder strap, which is not included. The box is marked with a U.S. embossed on the front lid, and and the lower left corner is stamped with a faded inspector marking:
R. WHITE
U.S.
ORD. DEPT.
SUB INSPECTOR
There is unfortunately no maker marking on the back, but on these cases finding ANY markings is an achievement. The interior flap is in very good condition and is complete with both ears. Both tins are present, with some oxidation. The bottom of the box has both roller buckles, with intact rivets and stitching. There are no slots on either side of the U.S. marking, so this box did not have a front plate installed at any time.
Offered in overall very good condition with signs of use and age. Ready to display!
