Original U.S. Civil War Model 1858 Smooth Side Canteen with Sling by J.C. Johnson & Co. - 1865 Dated

Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. Here is a handsome, Civil War specimen of the Model 1858 "Smooth Side" or "Flat Back" pattern tin canteen offered in very good condition. Originally canteens had "ribbed" sides in a bullseye pattern, but to expedite production, this feature was removed, and very common in "New York Depot" canteens. This type of canteen also feature an iron chain connecting the stopper ring to one of the side strap brackets.

The model 1858 canteen was the most popular canteen of the Civil War period. Canteen measures approximately 7 3/4” in diameter, with a fluid capacity of three pints. It is covered in brown wool with flecks of color in the weave, which was intended to help cool the canteen when wet. Often scraps were used in the weave to reduce costs. The cover is mostly complete and in good condition, with faded regimental markings on the front side. It also has some large dents on this side, sustained in service or storage.  All three sling loops, the spout, and sling are present, as is the original chained stopper. The side of the spout is marked with the maker and contract date:

J.C. JOHNSON & CO.
FEB.6.65

Contracts immediately following 1863 called for the full name of the contractor to be placed upon the canteen. To take marking one step further, beginning 8 May 1864 the QMD began requiring the full name of the contractor, along with the contract date, to be placed on all items of clothing and equipage received. Canteens were no exception, as the numerous dated, late War examples found today will attest.

A great chance to own a solid example of an iconic canteen, with loads of patina.
