Original Item: Only One Available. Here is a handsome, Civil War specimen of the Model 1858 "Smooth Side" or "Flat Back" pattern tin canteen offered in very good condition. Originally canteens had "ribbed" sides in a bullseye pattern, but to expedite production, this feature was removed.
The model 1858 canteen was the most popular canteen of the Civil War period. Canteen measures approximately 7 3/4” in diameter. It is covered in brown wool with flecks of color in the weave. Often scraps were used in the weave to reduce costs. The cover is complete and in good condition with only minor stains and wear, and a bit of moth. All three sling loops, the spout, and sling are present. The spout does not have a visible maker mark.
