Original U.S. Civil War M1855/61 Cartridge Box by G. & D. Cook & Co. with Sling, U.S. Box Plate & Replica Tins - Mounted on Board

Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. This is an interesting Federal Issue Cartridge Box which has certainly seen some service during the American Civil War! This is a genuine Federal Issue leather Pattern 1855 .58 Caliber Cartridge Box, made after 1861 when contractors were required to stamp their maker information on the box. It still has the original U.S. box plate on the front and the original sling, along with high quality old replica tins. It has been mounted to a display board measuring approximately 33" x 11", and we have made no attempts to remove it, as it is nailed on. It definitely has a lovely aged look to it, with the original finish on the leather having degraded and started to flake away.

Lifting up the top flap shows the maker name stamped on the top of the cover flap for the tins:

G. & D. COOK & Co.
MAKERS
NEW HAVEN - CT

The plate is still attached to the top flap, though the securing pins / leather pieces on the back are now gone. The outer flap shows wear, and it still retains the latch tab, though it is definitely torn and in delicate condition. The cartridge box strap buckles are both present, however one has broken loose from the bottom of the box, and is now only attached to the strap. The interior flap is intact with both side ears of the flap, and the tool pouch is intact with flap and closure tab. Leather shows signs of obvious age, flaking, and so on. The bottom of the box the brass finial stud intact, and the reverse of the box has both belt loops.

This is a lovely example of a classic piece of Civil War field equipment, ready to hang on the wall! Perfect for a collector looking to simply have a representative example, or an advanced collector!
