Original U.S. Civil War M1855 .58 Caliber Cartridge Box with Original Tins & Belt Buckle used as Box Plate

Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. This is an interesting Federal Issue Cartridge Box which has certainly seen some service during the American Civil War! This is a genuine Federal Issue leather Pattern 1855 .58 Caliber Cartridge Box made by the firm of H.A. Dingee of New York. In addition, the soldier’s name is carved into the outer flap of the box, just above the plate.

Of particular interest, the right side lower corner shows slight upwards curling from the soldier who wore it repeatedly lifting the outer flap of the cartridge box to access the cartridges held within. Both original matching cartridge tins are present.

The soldier who carried this box carved his name on the outer flap, just above the box plate. The name as it appears to this writer is W. Walley. There are numerous Soldiers who this could have possibly been, based on a cursory search on the National Park Service Civil War Soldiers and Sailor’s Database.

Another interesting feature is the fact that at one point or another, the original Cartridge Box Plate was separated and lost from this Cartridge Box, and in its place a U.S. Waist Belt Buckle (arrowback) was put on the box in place of the plate. The Buckle has undoubtedly been on the Cartridge Box for a very long time, due to the verdigris and patina that has accumulated where the brass interacts with the leather.

The Outer flap has light surface wear with a latch tab that is attached by a row of stitching. Surprisingly, the original closure tab is completely intact and unbroken, which is a rarity nowadays with these artifacts. Both Cartridge box strap buckles are intact, although one has separated. Interior flap is intact with the marking H.A. DINGEE / N. YORK, with side ears of the flap both intact Tool pouch is intact with flap and closure tab. Leather shows signs of obvious age, flaking, and so on. The bottom of the box has both roller buckles and brass final intact. Reverse of the box has both belt loops.

This is an excellent example of a classic piece of Civil War field equipment. Perfect for a collector looking to simply have a representative example, or an advanced collector!
