Item Description
Original Item. Only One Available. This is an incredibly scarce piece for the advanced Mexican-American War collector, a Model of 1841 Dragoon belt. These were utilized by Dragoons during the Mexican American War and the Civil War. This example is in tremendous order with a great brown color to the buff. The oval, brass, Pattern 1839 Belt Plate has a lead back and 'puppy paw' fasteners and belt hook, and this example retains something we have never seen before, the original belt plate leather shield for the back of the puppy paw plate. These are so scarce that most collectors have never seen one, but we have this one contained in a riker case to keep it safe.
The Dragoons were the earliest U.S. Cavalry and served on the western frontier. Both Lee and Stuart served in the Dragoons before the Civil War. Buff leather was used because it did not deteriorate like other types of leather. US regulations called for white buff until 1851, when the color was changed to dark buff leather. This would make this example a Post-1851 example, more likely issued for the Civil War. Two straps were attached to the belt to carry the sword by metal rings, and these straps are both still well-retained without any serious damage. These were often worn with the Model 1833 Dragoon Saber produced by Ames.
The buff is in great order without any serious weakness. A tremendous Civil War set, ready for further research and display.
