Original Item: Only One Available. This is an excellent example of a U.S. Civil War issue Model 1840 Non-Commissioned Officer's sword, manufactured by Emerson & Silver of Trenton NJ. The sword measures 38 1/2" overall, and has an all-brass hilt, with a "double scallop" cross guard, and a "D" hand guard enclosing the knurled hand grip. Comes complete in its straight brass-mounted steel scabbard with intact frog hook. Many makers made these with Leather Scabbards, but Emerson and Silver specifically made them with brass-fitted steel.
The 32 inch straight blade's ricasso is marked on one side with the Emerson & Silver company marking -

One the other side it is marked-

D.F.M.
1863
There is an additional D.F.M. on the hand guard, directly in the middle, as well as on the scabbard drag, which corresponds to the Union inspector's initials. Dexter F. Mosman inspected swords at Emerson & Silver from 1862 to 1865, though his marking is only found on 1860 Cavalry Sabers in 1864. In 1863 he inspected both NCO swords such as this one, as well as Musician swords.
This sword is in good condition, with the expected wear from age, and little sign of field use. The blade still retains almost all of it's original polished bright steel finish but does have scattered areas of staining. There is just a bit of staining and runner wear near the tip of the blade. The hilt is in great shape without any major denting.
The scabbard is mostly straight, with a few dents on the body, as well as on the scabbard drag. The steel body was originally blued, but has faded to a nice gray patina over the decades. There is some heavy rusting on the steel, which is expected.
This is an absolutely genuine U.S. Civil War issue 1840 Army NCO sword, offered in excellent condition. Ready to display!
