Original Item: Only One Available. This is a very nice well patinated example of a U.S. Civil War issue Model 1840 Non-Commissioned Officer's sword with its leather scabbard. It was produced by Collins & Co of Hartford, Connecticut. The sword measures 38 1/2" overall, and has an all-brass hilt, with a "double scallop" cross guard, and a "D" hand guard enclosing the knurled hand grip. The sword comes with a complete leather scabbard.
The 32 inch straight blade's ricasso is marked with:
COLLINS & CO.
HARTFORD
CONN.
1862
There are no inspector’s markings we can find. This sword is in good condition, with the expected wear from age, and little sign of field use. The blade shows heavy use and there is a heavy amount of pitting at the tip due to it missing the tip of the scabbard. The hilt is in great shape, and still has some gilding present on the blade side of the cross guard. The blade is tight to the hilt but the grip shifts a small bit.
The scabbard’s stitching is in fair shape and it retains all parts, but the leather is very heavily cracking and crazing.
This is an absolutely genuine U.S. Civil War issue 1840 Army NCO sword, offered in excellent condition. Ready to display!
