Original Item. Only One Available. The Spencer repeating rifle was a manually operated lever-action, repeating rifle fed from a tube magazine with cartridges. It was adopted by the Union Army, especially by the cavalry, during the American Civil War, but did not replace the standard issue muzzle-loading rifled muskets in use at the time. The Spencer carbine was a shorter and lighter version. Like all deactivated ordnance, this set is Not Available for Export.
This is an outstanding box originally containing 42 No. 56 metallic cartridges for the Spencer Rifle/Carbine or Joslyn’s Carbine. They were manufactured by C.D. Leet & Co. of Springfield, Massachusetts, using Smith & Wesson’s Patent, dated April 17th, 1860. The box is now in pieces but retains all six “packs” on the interior, though the bottom of the box has now fallen out.
Of the six packs, one is entirely empty, one is open but full, and the other four are “sealed”, though two of them have heavy residue now falling out of the corners. This means the set retains 35 of the original 42 cartridges. The residue coming out isn’t a huge issue, but be mindful when handling the packs as more residue is bound to come out over time.
As mentioned the box is in pieces, but it will still sit great for display. It is a very heavy set, so again please do be careful when handling it.
