  • Original Item: Only One Available. Everything about this image, including its presentation, makes it a splendid memento of the Civil War. This Civil War cased "Ninth Plate" (2 x 2.5 inch) tintype portrait shows a soldier, 1st Class Musician Austin B. Lawrence, of the Field & Staff, 13th Massachusetts Infantry, wearing a mounted greatcoat, and a kepi bearing the number 13. The photo is period colorized, a true work of art.

The image is behind glass held in an ornate brass mat loaded with intricate patriotic designs edging the tintype, including American flags, cannons, and the phrase THE UNION NOW AND FOREVER. A leatherette case molded front and back with an ornate pattern. Interior of the case is lined in velvet type material. The locking mechanism is still present on both parts of the case, but due to some damage to the gutta-percha, it no longer locks.

The back of the photo itself has a note reading:

    My grandfather
    Austin B. Lawrence
    When he was in the
    Civil War. 1866

The maker’s mark under the photo reads:

    Holmes, Booth & Haydens’
    DAGUERREOTYPE,
    PHOTOGRAPHIC
    AND
    Ambrotype Goods,
    Of every description.

A very lovely named and identified tintype, ready for further research and display!
