  • Original Item. Only One Available. This is a great example of a Genuine U.S. Civil War veteran’s Grand Army of the Republic Chasseur Pattern Kepi. This Union style Chasseur Pattern Kepi features fabric of dark blue wool broadcloth and bears a bullion insignia on the front for the Grand Army of the Republic Post #58.

The cap came with a museum provenance tag, stating that the kepi was worn by Sergeant Major “John D. Clark”, 44th Pennsylvania Regiment, 1st Cavalry Company G, Harrisburg. The tag states he was present at the Battle of Gettysburg, and on July 2nd, 1863 he was a guard for General Meade’s Headquarters. The back of the tag states the kepi was purchased from Clark’s descendants around 1972.

Post 58 was for Harrisburg, PA according to the tag, and the cap was manufactured by J.H. Wilson in Philadelphia, from around 1873-1895. The flat visor is original to the hat, and composed of black patent leather. It is edged with leather that is stitched in place. The sweatband is completely gone and the lining is partially torn off, but it is still there. The chinstrap is still affixed to the front by the two GAR buttons, and is in rough shape but is still retained. A very nice display piece. This is a very good example of a named later 19th century Grand Army of the Republic kepi.

There are records of Clark in the 44th PA, making this a great research project!
