Item Description
Original Item: One of a Kind. This is a very interesting German percussion infantry musket, which looks to have been converted from flintlock to percussion, and then imported into the United States for the Civil War. It has an overall peppered patina, however some markings are visible on the lock plate: with KÖNG, and underneath this FABRIK, while the rest of the markings are unfortunately faded. This is possibly part of an abbreviation for the Königlich Württembergische Gewehrfabrik ("Royal Württemberg Gun Factory"). Other factories in Germany bore similar names, so unfortunately determining the exact source is impossible.
The musket is all iron Mounted with .71" caliber 43 inch barrel, and is 57 1/2" in overall length. It has the typical look of early German Flintlock muskets, which were based heavily on the French M1777 "Charleville" muskets, just as early U.S. Muskets were. Metalwork with old pits overall but still presenting very well. The Stock is probably of black walnut in truly splendid condition with cheek piece carved into left hand side.
On the right hand side of stock is an old note adhered stating:-
Civil War Austrian Converted
Flintlock (1812 - 1860)
Brought home by
Wm. Flon
10th Ohio Vol. Infantry
Possibly a captured
Confederate Gun.
This is just what was told to the collector when it was added to their collection, so we unfortunately have no way of verifying this information. However this makes it an excellent opportunity for further research. It is however definitely German, and not Austrian in design.
In overall good condition ready to display!
