Original Item. One-of-a-Kind. This is an exemplary service roster for Company G of the 20th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry Regiment, which fought for the Union in the American Civil War. At first glance, the roster is a gorgeous piece of history, but upon closer inspection, you’ll find that it has been annotated with remarks next to most names, such as Killed, Wounded, Discharged, Deserted, and Promoted. This makes this a truly phenomenal piece of history that will allow for nearly endless research into the individual men that made up Company G.
The frame that the roster is in measures 18 x 22”. The roster is torn and missing some pieces near the top as shown. Thankfully, the damage is isolated to the top, and there is no loss to the names or annotations! The three officers of the company, Captain Edward G. Miller, 1st Lieutenant Albert J. Rockwell, and 2nd Lieutenant James Ferguson, all have small ovular photographs attached to the roster. James Ferguson was the only one out of the three to be wounded, and was later promoted to Captain and transferred to command Company A of the same regiment, as is annotated below his name.
On the bottom left Memoranda, there is a key with 2 symbols used to signify whether the killed soldier was killed at the Battle of Prairie Grove, or at the Battle of Vicksburg. The list of enlisted men of the company includes 9 men killed in action, with 8 being killed at Prairie Grove and 1 being killed at Vicksburg. 9 men were wounded including Lieutenant Ferguson who was previously mentioned. Another number of men deserted, resigned, were discharged, transferred, or promoted. This is a truly phenomenal piece of history for this company, likely the only of its kind. If you are a Civil War Collector, you’ll know how scarce these are. The frame is fully mountable with a metal hanging chain on the back. Comes ready for further research and display.
The 20th Wisconsin was organized at Madison, Wisconsin, and mustered into Federal service August 23, 1862. The regiment was mustered out on July 14, 1865, at Galveston, Texas. The 20th Wisconsin Regiment suffered 5 officers and 100 enlisted men killed in action or who later died of their wounds, plus another 1 officer and 145 enlisted men who died of disease, for a total of 251 fatalities.
