Original U.S. Civil War Federal Union 34 Star American Garrison Flag

Item Description

Original Item: One-of-a-kind. This is poor condition yet wonderful genuine 34 star dating from between 1861 and 1863. Kansas was admitted into the Union as the 34th state on January 29th, 1861, about 2 1/2 months before the Southern States assault on Fort Sumter that marked the beginning of the Civil War. The 34th star was officially added on July 4th of that year, but most flag makers would have added a 34th star with the addition of Kansas in January. The star count remained official until July 4th, 1863, and 34 star flags would have been produced until the addition of West Virginia in June of that year.

Overall dimension 111" x 72". This extraordinary flag features a canton of blue wool on which 34 stars and each have been hand-applied. A lanyard channel of canvas or similar material runs along the hoist side. The field is composed of operate hand stitched red and white wool stripes, each about ?" wide. Flags of this type and scale were typically used as garrison flags or flown over large buildings.

Overall condition is poor with heavy loss and fragile material. Please see photos for damage detail. Regardless it has an undeniable eye appeal and with the right mounting would be very impressive for display. Offered at a very reasonable price for a genuine Civil War Era Garrison flag.
