Original Item: One-of-a-kind. An excavated example of the Hotchkiss shell still retaining its base. Shell measures 7" long. The M1841 bronze 6-pounder cannon proved to be an excellent weapon during the Mexican–American War.
Variants of the M1841 bronze 6-pounder were also manufactured in the Confederacy though records are sketchy. Because the South lacked the North's industrial capacity, the 6-pounders were employed by Confederate armies for a longer period. Robert E. Lee wanted the old Model 1841 bronze guns to be melted down and recast into 12-pounder Napoleons. Nevertheless, there were still numbers of the old pieces serving with Southern armies as late as the Battle of Chancellorsville.
This is a really appealing shell with a length of approximately 6 inches. This type of shell used a Hotchkiss brass fuse plug, which would have a paper timed fuse inserted before firing.
After the Civil War concluded, Hotchkiss moved to France, and set up the well known Hotchkiss et Cie.
This is a great chance to own an original U.S. Civil War Union projectile.
