Original U.S. Civil War Federal 3.0 Inch Ordnance Rifle Solid Shot Bolt Projectile - Possibly Austrian

Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. This is a very nice recovered U.S. Civil War Solid Shot "Bolt" projectile, intended for use with the M1861 3-inch Ordnance Rifle. This small cannon had a wrought iron barrel, and was widely used by field artillery units during the Civil War. These proved to be highly accurate at longer ranges when firing Shot, Shells, and Shrapnel. They were produced by Phoenix Iron Works in Phoenixville, Pennsylvania.

This projectile is definitely solid, and is quite heavy at 13 lbs. It does not conform to one of the typical types seen, however we believe it was imported from Austria, and is similar to the projectiles they used. It does have bands where there used to be rifling sabots installed, however those are now gone. There is also a threaded hole in the bottom of the projectile, possibly for attachment of some other type of sabot.

Very interesting and definitely worth further research!
