Item Description
Original Item: Only One available. Once upon a time this was a nice European musket, imported for use in the U.S. Civil War. That was in the 1860's, when many European countries were taking advantage of the large need for arms in the Americas, and converted or made all types of percussion firearms. After the war it was taken or sold off and used by homesteaders as a utility weapon for hunting and personal protection on the frontier, as most European weapons were.
In its time it has seen several transformations, often not with the highest level of workmanship, leaving what we offer here today. In itself it is not too bad having had most of the alteration around the barrel tang and breech, with fresh wood having been inlaid. The barrel bears Austrian Proof marks on the left side, however it also bears the "Tower of Liège" on the right, and a faint BELGIUM stamp on the top. Judging from the size of the barrel, it is not original to this stock. The fore end it missing a section of top wood along the barrel on the right hand side, and there is also a cut through hidden by the barrel band, so the entire fore stock is probably a replacement. Overall the stock cut back somewhat, moving the iron nose cap, leaving 8" of the 35" barrel protruding. The musket comes with its ram rod. It also appears that some parts at one point were Nickel plated.
No doubt this musket sat over the Cabin's fireplace for many years just waiting for a Stag to appear or perhaps a visit from a claim jumper? A good decorator with original Civil War provenance, ready to display!
