Original U.S. Civil War Era Swiss Model 1842 Smoothbore Percussion Musket Serial 832 - Stock Cut Under Band

Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. Here we have a lovely example of a Swiss Model 1842 (M.1842) percussion musket, which we believe was made as a percussion musket and not converted from a flintlock. It is in very nice shape, and unlike almost all of these on the market, was not later rifled or breech loading converted, making this a fairly rare example! We believe that it was probably imported into the United States in the late 1850's, most likely by the Confederate States for use against the Yankees in the Civil War. Many obsolete European percussion arms were imported by the Confederacy, and as the Swiss 1842 was in .69" caliber, it would have worked well with old musket balls from the U.S. Model 1816 Muskets.

At some point after that, the stock was cut for some reason under the upper barrel band, however it does not look to be a typical "duffle cut" at all. It is well done and for some reason curved, almost like it was done with a jig saw. It was curved to go right behind the end of the lock spring, and is pretty much unnoticeable with the band in place, though if you pull on the nose cap the section of fore stock will slide forward.

This musket was made in Switzerland and still bears the original Swiss markings on most components. It has serial number 832 on the left side of the barrel, and there is also what looks to possibly be the coat of arms for the Swiss "Canton" it was originally issued to. Some of these were produced in Liège, Belgium, but we do not see any Belgian proof marks anywhere on the musket. It is marked with BF on the lock plate, side plate, an on most of the fittings, which may be the makers initials, or possibly an inspection marking.

We checked the lock, and it is fully functional, holding at half cock and firing at full. The stock has a lovely honey color, with some staining around the iron mountings, which are quite reminiscent of the French design, which is most likely what the Swiss patterned these off of. Both sling swivels are present, though the trigger guard swivel is frozen, and the original ramrod is still present.

A very nice example, ready to repair or display as is!
