  • Original Item: Only One Available. This is a very good original U.S. Model 1860 Light Cavalry Saber, manufactured by Mansfield & Lamb of Forestdale, Rhode Island, and dated 1864, retaining its original leather grip covering, twisted brass wire, three-branch brass guard, and leather blade washer. The saber is accompanied by a later Model 1906 cavalry saber scabbard, which is not original to the sword but provides a correct-period military display scabbard of closely related form.

The curved 35 inch blade's ricasso is marked on one side with:

    MANSFIELD
    &
    LAMB
    FORESTDALE. R.I.

The markings on the other side are also a bit worn, but much more legible: -

    U.S.
    J.M.
    1864

The curved blade is marked as being inspected by J.M who was a Union Government Inspector. The blade looks to be in good shape, mostly bright, with some minor staining. It has a fair edge with some tiny nicks / bends. The original leather blade buffer is retained, rare to see!

The three branch brass hand guard is in good shape, and has a lovely oxidized patina, and just a few dents.

The saber comes in an incorrect but passable Model 1906 cavalry saber scabbard which has the two ring mounts closer together than on the Model 1860 scabbard.

The body of the scabbard is a bit beaten up, with some moderate denting toward the drag. The scabbard does show signs of past oxidation, which has not been cleaned off.

This saber is particularly noteworthy for the combination of its 1864 Mansfield & Lamb Forestdale maker marking, U.S. / J.M. government inspection marks, J.M.-stamped pommel, surviving original leather grip and twisted wire, original blade washer, and later Model 1906 cavalry scabbard. The sword itself is a genuine Civil War-period U.S. Model 1860 Light Cavalry Saber, while the mismatched scabbard documents the continued interchangeability and long service life of American cavalry equipment into the early 20th century.
