Original Item. Only One Available. This is a great set of four original sealed tins of percussion caps dating around the Civil War period. Three of the tins are the same brand, U.M.C. Co out of Bridgeport, Connecticut. The other is of J. Goldmark’s Perc. Caps out of New Haven, Connecticut. This is not available for export, and will be shipped UPS Ground only.
Percussion caps were an integral part of the kit of any soldier wielding a “modern” rifle or updated musket that uses them, as opposed to the older flintlock system. The cap works as a primer in lighting the gunpowder which propels the projectile. These caps were mass-produced by a myriad of companies across the north and south before, during, and after the U.S. Civil War.
The J. Goldmark tin of caps is given a patent date of September 24th, 1867, shortly after the Civil War. This tin’s label is quite deteriorated but is still visible. The three U.M.C. Co tins are of varying condition, one with a lid label that is 75% intact, one that is 50% intact, and one that is 25% intact. All four tins remain sealed and would fit perfectly into any U.S. Civil War Collection. Despite the tins being sealed, we would not recommend using them for their intended purpose today, and instead that they should be displayed alongside a rifle or as part of a soldier’s kit. The U.M.C. Co tins have a diameter of about 2”, while the J. Goldmark tin has a diameter of 2⅜”.
Sealed tins of caps don’t come up too terribly often, so don’t miss out on this very nice lot!
