Item Description
Original Item: Only One Available. The outbreak of the U.S. Civil War massively disrupted trade around the country, as well as international trade. During the early years of the war, supplies were short on both sides, especially in the South, which lacked the North's manufacturing capacity. Even after the raid on Harper's Ferry Arsenal, they still needed to import many goods from overseas.
This is a typical example of a French Artillery sword that would have been imported during the Civil war, particularly by the South. it is in the typical style for these artillery short swords, though definitely lighter in construction than the official Federal design. These rarely had any markings on them, so as to hide their origin, and prevent possible reprisals from the winning side should material support be discovered.
Condition of the sword is very good, with the expected wear and oxidation on the blade from use and age. It has been sharpened at least once, rather crudely on one side, and there is also a saw cut into the blade extending in about 3/8 of an inch. The brass handle is in good shape, with light wear and a lovely patina.
The brass fitted leather scabbard is also in good shape, though it does show age and has shrunk somewhat. The leather body is loose in both the locket and chape fittings, due to the leather stretching around the attachment metal loops. The leather is stiff over all, and has some finish wear. The leather belt frog is also quite stiff, but does not show much damage or dry rot.
This is a very nice example a typical imported French sword used during the U.S. Civil War. Ready to display!
