  • Original Item. Only One Available. This is a very attractive original Civil War-era embossed sporting powder flask featuring the classic “Dead Game” or “Hanging Game” motif, with hunted game suspended upside down across the body. Measuring approximately 8 inches long, the flask retains its pouring spout, threaded top, two suspension rings, and an unusual surviving brass carrying chain. No maker’s marking has been located.

The embossed hunting scene belongs to a well-established family of mid-19th-century sporting flask designs commonly referred to by collectors as “Dead Game” or “Hanging Game.” Comparable examples are generally dated to approximately the 1850s through 1870s, placing this example comfortably within the Civil War period, although the hunting subject indicates that it was intended primarily as sporting equipment rather than military issue.

The flask measures approximately 8” long. The cap still screws on and off without issue. There is no powder remaining in the flask. There are two small rings on the edges meant to hold the carrying chain which is still retained. This example dates to the Civil War period, but was likely meant as a hunting flask given the depiction.

This example is particularly noteworthy for the combination of its recognized “Dead Game” embossed hunting motif, approximately 8-inch size, functional threaded top and pouring spout, surviving suspension rings, and retained brass carrying chain. Its unmarked construction prevents a secure maker attribution, but its form and decoration are consistent with documented sporting powder flasks produced during the middle decades of the 19th century.
