Item Description
Original Item: Only One Available. This is a lovely patinated Civil War Era Pocket Percussion Revolver, made by the COOPER FIREARMS MFG. CO.. The company was a competitor of Samuel Colt, and introduced this very neat DOUBLE ACTION Pocket Percussion Revolver to compete with the Colt 1849 Pocket Model Revolver. The striking advantage to the Cooper was it's ability to shot from both single action and double action, doing away with having to re-cock the revolver after each shot is taken. Single action could still be used when greater accuracy was desired.
This examples in fine honest used condition with the original finish worn to an oxidized patina, and the markings still almost fully intact. Made in FRANKFORD, PA. as stamped on the 4" barrel, the revolver is 9" in overall length. Patent dates starting in 1851 go up to 1863 so this particular example was produced during the last two years of the Civil War for Officer's private purchase. Another important stepping stone in U.S. Revolver development.
This revolver is Six shot percussion, .31 caliber with a 4" barrel. The serial Number 400 is clearly marked on the pistol grip frame, barrel, cylinder, and arbor pin, while the loading rammer is marked with shortened number 00. That makes this a very desirable "ALL MATCHING" example, with no parts swapped out over the years. We did notice however that the screw at the bottom of the right recoil shield cutout is missing. It is in nice condition with a lovely oxidized patina, and some past peppering present, particularly on the barrel. Appears to be in good working condition and is nicely marked with the manufacture and patent information across the top of the octagonal barrel-

The walnut grips are in good shape, with a lovely color and the expected patina of age. They no longer have any of the original factory varnish, and show a missing chunk on the front left toe, a common place for this to occur. This looks like a revolver that was carried for a long time in service.
The revolver functions in both double and single action, as originally designed, and shows good indexing with a strong dry fire. There is a bit of an issue in single action mode where the cylinder can over rotate before the cylinder lock engages, but if the hammer is pulled back slowly this does not happen. The barrel frame connection does wobble a bit, and the barrel wedge can be removed relatively easily to take down the pistol. There are no signs of it having been adjusted in the past.
The bore is in very good condition, showing crisp lands and grooves and a bright finish. There is just a bit of past oxidation and fouling, now cleaned away. We almost never see Civil War era percussion revolvers with bores this good! The cap nipple cones on the cylinder are all clear, showing past oxidation and fouling on the exterior.
This is a very nice patinated Cooper Double Action Pocket Pistol dating from the Civil War Era with a great bore, a wonderful acquisition for any collection! Ready to display!
