Original U.S. Civil War Era Army Officer's M1860 Dress Parade Sword with Scabbard & Sword Knot

Item Description

Original Item: One of a Kind. We received this out of an old attic collection, where it had been for some time. This is the standard Union Officer's Dress or Parade Sword Model 1860, issued during the Civil War Era. This example does not have any makers mark, which usually indicates that it was custom made for the officer.

It has a very nice spear point nickel plated blade, totally unadorned for the maximum shine potential. It looks like it may have been replated at least once, as there are some artifacts under the plating.

The sword measures 35 1/4" overall, and the hilt and "shell" Guard are bronze/brass and the grip is wire wrapped black composition material, which may have been painted over. The wiring is twisted, and in really good shape. It does look like at some point a previous owner painted the entire hilt with gold paint to improve the appearance, covering the original metal. The guard has a lovely sword knot installed, though this may be a more recent addition from when the hilt was painted.

It comes in its original decorated brass mounted steel scabbard, which has a very nice plated finish and a lovely patina. Scabbard is straight, with no real dents that we can see. The retaining screw for the end fitting is missing, so it could potentially fall off.

Just out of the attic but ready to display!
