This is a very attractive original Civil War era powder flask manufactured by the American Flask & Cap Company of Waterbury, Connecticut, a comparatively short-lived concern organized in 1857 and consolidated into the Waterbury Brass Company in 1865. Measuring approximately 9 1/2” long, this is a substantial example with a deeply fluted copper body, brass charger assembly, and a functioning spring-operated cutoff lever. The flask shows considerable age and evidence of period use, giving the copper and brass surfaces a strong, naturally developed patina.

The flask is marked on the top of the spout AM. FLASK & CAP CO.. The pouring cap has the desired powder amounts stamped on to allow for proper pour rates. The cap screws on and off perfectly with no issue, but the opening lever shows a bit of oxidation, although it does still work. There is no powder remaining in the flask. This example dates to the Civil War period. The flask measures roughly 9 1/2” in length, a very long example.

With its AM. FLASK & CAP CO. marking, deeply fluted copper body, brass graduated charger, functioning spring mechanism, substantial 9 1/2” size, and naturally aged surfaces, this is a particularly appealing piece of mid-19th-century American firearms equipment.
