Original Item: One-of-a-kind. This is an original U.S. Civil War wood framed "Hard Pack" Knapsack or Backpack. Dating between the 1860 - 1865 this Union issue Civil War pack is painted on the front flap with a 32 in white. Several 32nd Infantry Regiments served during the Civil War, with the 32nd New York Infantry ("1st California") and 32nd Wisconsin Infantry being notable Union units. Thankfully there is a name under the flap that may aid in identification.
The underside of the flap is inscribed:
Ith Srgt.
T. Thirle
This would denote issue to a 1st Sergeant T. Thirle, but we couldn’t find any soldier with this name, so it requires some deeper research.
Wood framed pack covered with waterproofed canvas is often seen on Civil War issued haversacks. Pack measures approx. 15.0 inches long x 4.0 inches wide x 13.75 high. All straps are missing on this example. The buckles are present and there is a very small fragment of a strap on one. The interior flaps are in good condition and retain their ties. This pack is very well-worn but still retains the front flap showing the gorgeous paint work.
These are always difficult to find, especially ones that are marked to a specific regiment. This is a really great example, perfect for any Civil War collection. Comes ready for further research and display.
