Original U.S. Civil War Early Model 1860 Army Staff and Field Officer Sword with Engraved Blade by J.H.Wilson - With Scabbard

Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available: This original M1860 Staff and Field officer’s sword is one of many produced by various manufacturers from the Civil War to the turn of the century. American manufactured by the J.H. Wilson & Company, Military Equipment of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

This officer's sword was adopted on August 28, 1860 acting upon the officer who would rarely if ever be called upon to wield a sword in battle. It was not mandatory until after the close of the Civil War, however in 1872, this sword became mandatory for all officers except medical staff, paymasters, mounted officers of infantry, cavalry & light artillery.

This M1860 sword is an edged weapon that was designed mostly for ceremonial use. The straight, double-edged steel blade measures 30” long and features a diamond-shaped cross section. The blade is nickel-plated which appears to have been done later, as it heavily distorts the etching which depicts an eagle and military panoply of arms. A good chunk of the nickel-plating is chipped and coming off. On the ricasso it’s marked:

J.H. WILSON
PHILA
PA.

The Sword hilt and handle is brass, with the sharkskin handle having a separate brass wire wrap to mimic the wire used on the leather handled versions. Steel scabbard has a pleasing, dark gray/brown patina and is adorned with two brass mounts and a brass drag; the brass throat is still present. Both mounts exhibit a floral display. The top mount sports two rings while the lower mount has only one. The brass drag features a star on one side and crossed flags on the other. Both sword mounts and the drag are tight. Much of the plating is still present on the scabbard and there are no significant dents or damage present that we can see.

This is a very handsome sword which is a must have for the collector of 19th Century U.S. Militaria.
