Original U.S. Civil War / Early Indian Wars 47th New York Infantry Regiment Officers Private Purchase Chasseur Style Pattern Kepi by J.H. McKenney & Co - Complete

Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. This is a fine example of a Civil War to early Indian Wars chasseur-style kepi in good condition. As issued to both enlisted men and officer’s during this period. This kepi is for an Officer in the 47th New York Infantry Regiment and is identified as being such from the badge on the front and the quatrefoil on top.

This Federal Chasseur Pattern Kepi features fabric of very fine blue wool broadcloth. The crown stands nearly 2 ⅝” high at the front, 4 ¼” at the rear seam and the top is 5 ¼” in diameter, stiffened with a pasteboard beneath the lining. The body of the cap meets a band of wool seamed only at the rear and stiffened with leather. The cap's interior is not lined with the often seen black polished cotton, but instead has a very fine “skull cap” still mostly attached. The leather sweatband is 1 1/8" wide. The flat visor is original to the hat, and composed of painted leather. The leather chinstrap is secured on the side with two New York State buttons. The front of the cap has a lovely 47 in bullion thread on a red felt background in the center of a bullion wreath.

This fantastic example comes more than ready for further research and display!
