Item Description
Original Item: One Only. This is a GENUINE civil war Confederate Canteen from the BENEDICT MUSEUM on STATEN ISLAND, NEW YORK, which sadly closed in the 1920s. The entire contents were put into storage and were sold, as a lot, to one of the East Coast's most venerable Civil War Dealers, from whom IMA has acquired it.
This is a red painted tin "drum" shaped canteen just 5" across. The Canteen comes with a small cork stopper which is most probably a replacement since the 1860s. All three sling loops are still intact, but the sling is sadly missing.
The are a faint set of initials scratched on one side reading J.H.L., which apparently stand for "PRIVATE JOSIAH H. LONG" of the Charleston German Artillery.
The other side of the canteen has a very old hand written script label stuck onto it
stating:-
JOSIAH LONG
CANTEEN
WAR OF REBELLION
CHARLESTON
GERMAN ARTILLERY
This comes from an impeccable source from one of America's most revered experts who in fact purchased the Benedict Museum contents, as a collection in 1996. His identity will be shared with the final customer upon request.
