Original Item: Only One Available. This is a lovely Civil War Confederate Spherical 8" iron mortar round, measuring approximately 7.8" in diameter. A typical mortar shell with 'ears' was thinner and lighter than a shell of the same caliber for a gun. The fuze hole is much larger to take the long burning wood mortar fuze. Tong ears (holes); were used for lifting the ball and placing it in the tube so that the fuse would be facing out. This example is nicely painted:
