Original Items. Only One Pair Available. This is a very attractive pair of Confederate South Carolina uniform buttons worn during the Civil War. They are the same style of button, showing the seal of South Carolina with the state motto, Animis Opibusque Parati, meaning "Prepared in mind and resources."
Both buttons were manufactured by Van Wart, Son & Co., a British manufacturing and export firm based in Birmingham, England, that became a notable supplier of military uniform buttons to the Confederacy during the American Civil War. Because the South lacked the specialized industrial capacity to mass-produce high-quality brass stamped buttons, they relied heavily on British manufacturers. The buttons are each marked Van Wart, Son & Co..
The buttons are in great shape without any serious defects, though the finish is retained better on the coat button than the vest button.
The matching Van Wart, Son & Co. backmarks, shared South Carolina state-seal design, and complementary coat and vest sizes make this an especially appealing pair for a collection focused on Confederate uniforms, South Carolina military history, Civil War buttons, or British-supplied Southern material.
