Item Description
Original Item: Only One Available. This originated from the Collection we just acquired, amassed in the 1950's and 1960's, that has laid in storage ever since.
This is totally original TOWER marked 1861 percussion carbine or short rifle designed for Artillerymen of the period. It 's stock is walnut, the mounts are all brass. The lock bears ONLY the CROWN and NO V.R. indicating that this was never intended for British Government ownership and was for EXPORT ONLY.
The great export market at the time was to the Confederate States, who had Buying agents in England for this very purpose. These weapons were smuggled into the South by Blockade Runners, many of whom were apprehended by FEDERAL U.S. NAVY. This example clearly got through, and the butt plate tang is clearly stamped with a large C.S. All other details of this rifled weapons are correct as a Confederate import as well as the C.S. marking.
Very hard to find today on the Collector's market, in very nice condition, complete with its original ram rod. Wood stock is in very good condition, the bore still shows rifling. The moderate amount of powder burn around the cap lock bolster shows that this was a gun that definitely saw some use.
A Sleeper, in storage for 50 years and ready to display.
