  • Original Items: Only One Lot Available. This is a very interesting five-piece group of original Civil War-era Southern paper currency, including three Confederate States Treasury notes, a State of South Carolina Two Dollar note, and an 1864-dated Bank of Augusta, Georgia One Dollar note. The group includes several intriguing backstamps and period markings, including a San Antonio, Texas issue or payment stamp and a South Carolina palmetto-tree marking.

The first series of Confederate paper money, issued in March 1861, bore interest and had a total circulation of $1,000,000. As the war began to tilt against the Confederates, confidence in the currency diminished, and the government inflated the currency by continuing to print the unbacked banknotes. By the end of 1863, the Confederate dollar (or "Greyback", to distinguish it from the then-new "Greenback" paper US dollar, which was likewise put into circulation during the war) was quoted at just six cents in gold, and fell further still.

The Greyback is now a prized collector's item, in its many versions, including those issued by individual states and local banks. The various engravings of leading Confederates, gods and goddesses, trains, ships and enslaved Africans on these hastily printed banknotes, sometimes cut with scissors and signed by clerks, continue to stimulate debate among antique dealers, with even some of the counterfeit notes commanding high prices.

This is a great lot of five notes, including:

    - Confederate 100 Dollar Bill back-stamped for San Antonio, Texas bank with ink-stamp dated February 1864. Good shape with minor edge tearing.
    - Confederate 100 Dollar Bill, clearer than last one but with more edge tearing and some minor material loss. Has stamp on back but as it is sealed in plastic we cannot check it.
    - Confederate 50 Dollar Bill, double-sided with a CSA Palmetto tree stamp on the back. Serial numbered 12973 with some minor edge tearing.
    - State of South Carolina Two Dollar note, heavily worn with tattering and tearing, fading of the ink. Sealed in a plastic sleeve.
    - Bank of Augusta (Georgia) One Dollar Note, 1864 dated. Sealed in plastic sleeve, some tearing as shown.

The combination of the San Antonio February 1864 backstamp, second unidentified reverse stamp, palmetto-tree-marked Fifty Dollar note numbered 12973, heavily circulated South Carolina note, and 1864 Bank of Augusta issue makes this a varied Civil War currency group. Condition ranges from good with minor edge damage to heavily worn and torn, and several notes remain in protective sleeves that prevent complete examination of their reverse markings, leaving worthwhile opportunities for additional research.
