Original Item. One-of-a-Kind. This gorgeous leather pouch is a homespun Southern copy of the typical Union “Pattern 1861” infantry cartridge box. The large outer flap has the slightly scallop-shaped lower edge typical of Civil War-era Infantry boxes. It exhibits light wear overall, but is in tremendous condition for its age, and the flap was not cut for a plate.
Miraculously, the closing tab is still intact, as is the knob it attaches to. Only one of hte two buckles is retained on the bottom of the box. The inner flap is of thinner leather and retains both “ears, and covers the 2 retained cartridge tins. The stitching on the body of the box remains tight with some weakness. The back of the box retains its waist belt straps, which are in very good condition. The crude cuts of leather are indicative of early CS construction.
This is one of the most tremendous Civil War cartridge boxes we have offered, and only the second Confederate example we’ve had. Its construction is entirely indicative of early Confederate manufacturing. Comes ready for further research and display!
