Item Description
Original Item: Only One Available. The Colt "Pocket Percussion" Model 1849 revolvers in .31cal are essentially scaled down versions of the larger Navy Model 1851 in .36cal, and were developed concurrently. The serial Number 164038 can be found on all major parts, and indicates the year of manufacture as 1860, meaning this Colt revolver falls right before the U.S. Civil War. The barrel on these so-called "Wells Fargo" models is a very short 2 7/8" in length, allowing the weapon to easily concealed. There is no provision for a loading rammer, hence the cylinder needed to be removed to be reloaded. Despite the nickname there is NO EVIDENCE of any collaboration or order for these weapons between Wells Fargo and the Colt Manufacturing Company.
Six shot percussion, .31 caliber with a short 2 7/8" barrel, all serial numbers matching. In nice tight condition with nice aged finish and some old pitting marks evident. There are traces of the original cylinder "Stagecoach Holdup Scene" engraving visible, though there is also some denting and other damage. Appears to be in good functioning condition and is nicely marked in two lines across the top of the octagonal barrel (partly faded)-
NEW YORK CITY.
The walnut grips are in very good shape, with a nice color and the expected patina of age. They do not have any of the original "piano varnish" finish from the factory. The revolver is tight with firm lock-up and the action functions correctly, though it can be a bit finicky, as any firearm of this age and condition. The bore shows lands and grooves, though does have some fouling and corrosion.
This is a very nice '49 Pocket dating from the Civil War and is as tight as a drum; a wonderful acquisition for any collection.
