Original U.S. Civil War Colt M1849 Pocket Percussion Revolver with 5" Barrel made in 1863 - Serial 233480
Item Description
Original Item: Only One Available. The Colt "Pocket Percussion" Model 1849 revolvers in .31cal are essentially scaled down versions of the larger Navy Model 1851 in .36cal, and were developed concurrently. The serial Number 233480 can be found on the barrel, frame, trigger guard, and grip frame. The cylinder bears shortened number 33480, and the loading rammer has 3480. The arsenal replaced barrel wedge is seized, so we are not able to see the serial on the arbor pin. We would assume however that it is matching.
The serial number indicates indicates the year of manufacture as 1863, during the early portion of the U.S. Civil War, so it almost certainly saw service during the conflict. As this revolver has a serial number over 187000, it has a six round .31 caliber cylinder, instead of the previous five. It also features a standard 5" barrel, and is in very nice condition with nice aged finish on the steel.
The Colt New York single line address is still fully legible across the top of the octagonal barrel -
ADDRESS. COL. SAML COLT NEW-YORK U.S. AMERICA.
It also has the correct COLTS PATENT on the left frame under the cylinder, though there is no caliber marking on the trigger guard. The walnut grips are in very good shape, with a lovely color and the expected patina of age. They have some cracks and small chunks missing, and almost all of the original "Piano Varnish" finish has worn away.
The revolver functions well, with a crisp action and good cylinder indexing and lockup. The trigger is well adjusted and there is no issues with dry firing. The cylinder lock is a bit worn however, so on some positions the cylinder can be rotated by hand when at full cock. The bore shows clear lands and grooves, with a partly bright finish showing light wear and oxidation overall. All 6 cap nipple cones are intact, though they do show some oxidation and powder burn to the exterior.
This is a very nice '49 Pocket dating from the early Civil War, a wonderful acquisition for any collection. In very nice service used condition and ready to display!
