Original U.S. Civil War Colt M1849 Pocket Percussion Revolver with 4 inch Barrel made in 1863 - Serial 229091
Original Item: Only One Available. The Colt "Pocket Percussion" Model 1849 revolvers in .31cal are essentially scaled down versions of the larger Navy Model 1851 in .36cal, and were developed concurrently. The serial Number 229091 can be found on the barrel, frame, trigger guard and grip frame. The cylinder, cylinder axis pin, loading rammer, and barrel wedge all have a shortened version of this number, making this a very nice "ALL MATCHING" revolver, totally un-messed with, and it's definitely a great one!
The serial number indicates indicates the year of manufacture as 1863, during the height of the U.S. Civil War, so it almost certainly saw service during the conflict. As this revolver has a serial number over 187000, it has a six round .31 caliber cylinder, instead of the previous five. It also features a standard 4" barrel, and is in nice tight condition with nice aged finish on the steel. There is also a very faint COLT'S PATENT over the serial number marking.
The Colt later production short single address is still fully legible across the top of the octagonal barrel -
ADDRESS. COL. SAML COLT NEW-YORK U.S. A.
It also has the correct COLTS PATENT on the left frame under the cylinder, though the caliber marking has worn off the trigger guard. The walnut grips are in very good shape, with a lovely color and the expected patina of age. They still have most of the original "Piano Varnish" finish that was applied to these at the factory.
The revolver functions well, with a crisp action and good cylinder indexing and lockup. The trigger is well adjusted and there is no issues with dry firing. The bore shows clear lands and grooves, with a partly bright finish showing light oxidation and wear. The cap nipples vary in condition, with some clear and intact, while others are clogged and broken or crushed.
This is a very nice '49 Pocket dating from the late Civil War, a wonderful acquisition for any collection. In wonderful condition and ready to display!
