Original U.S. Civil War Colt M1849 Pocket Percussion Revolver with 4" Barrel made in 1863 - Serial 243662

Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. The Colt "Pocket Percussion" Model 1849 revolvers in .31cal are essentially scaled down versions of the larger Navy Model 1851 in .36cal, and were developed concurrently. The serial Number 243662 can be found on the barrel, frame, trigger guard, and grip frame. The cylinder and barrel wedge bear shortened number 43662, while the cylinder arbor pin is marked 3662. Only the loading rammer is an unmatched arsenal replacement, bearing number 9985. This was quite common for guns that saw service during the war.

The serial number indicates indicates the year of manufacture as 1863, during the early portion of the U.S. Civil War, so it almost certainly saw service during the conflict. As this revolver has a serial number over 187000, it has a six round .31 caliber cylinder, instead of the previous five. It also features a short 4" barrel, and is in nice tight condition with nice aged finish on the steel. There is also a legible COLT'S PATENT over the serial number marking on the cylinder, as well as portions of the original "Stagecoach Holdup" cylinder scene.

The Colt New York single line address is still mostly legible across the top of the octagonal barrel -

ADDRESS. COL. SAML COLT NEW-YORK U.S. AM[ERIC]A.

It also has the correct COLTS PATENT on the left frame under the cylinder, with 31CAL on the trigger guard. The walnut grips are in very good shape, with a lovely color and the expected patina of age. They still have a good amount of the original "Piano Varnish" finish that was applied to these at the factory, often worn completely away.

The revolver functions well, with a crisp action and good cylinder indexing and lockup. The trigger is well adjusted and there is no issues with dry firing. The bore shows clear lands and grooves, with a partly bright finish showing light wear and oxidation in the grooves. All 6 cap nipple cones are intact and clear, though they do show some oxidation and powder burn to the exterior.

This is a very nice '49 Pocket dating from the early Civil War, a wonderful acquisition for any collection. In wonderful condition and ready to display!
