  • Original Item: Only One Available. The Colt "Pocket Percussion" Model 1849 revolvers in .31cal are essentially scaled down versions of the larger Navy Model 1851 in .36cal, and were developed concurrently. This lovely patinated example features Serial Number 267922 on the barrel, frame, trigger guard, and grip frame, while the cylinder, and cylinder arbor pin have shortened versions of this number. Only the barrel wedge is an unmarked period arsenal replacement, making this a great "MOSTLY MATCHING" example, with only minor components swapped out.

The serial number indicates indicates the year of manufacture as 1864, during the latter half the U.S. Civil War, so it most likely saw service during the conflict, and possibly afterwards. As this revolver has a serial number over 187000, it has a six round cylinder, instead of the previous five. The revolver is in .31 caliber with a 6" barrel, in nice tight condition with a lovely worn patina on the steel and iron parts. The revolver looks to have seen long use while in service, with a lovely aged patina from oxidation and subsequent cleaning.

Like most we see, most of the original "Stagecoach Holdup" cylinder scene has been mostly worn away from past oxidation and cleaning, with just a few vestiges still present. There is also a bit of the "COLTS PATENT" marking by the serial number. The later Colt "Single Line" address is present and crisp across the top of the octagonal barrel:-

ADDRESS COL SAML COLT NEW-YORK U.S. AMERICA.

The COLTS PATENT marking is still mostly present on the left frame under the cylinder, and the brass trigger guard has the correct 31 CAL marking on the left side. The trigger guard and frame have lost the original plating, now showing some light denting and wear, with a lovely golden color to the brass. The iron and steel parts of the revolver show a very nice gray mottled patina, with some past pitting on the cylinder and recoil shield, probably from powder burn. Just a great honest used look from use and cleaning. The walnut grip is in very good condition, with a lovely color and no large chips we can see, just the usual wear around the bottom. The original piano varnish finish is completely worn away.

The revolver functions well, with accurate indexing and a firm cylinder lockup. The hammer is a bit stiff, and it can take a bit of effort to get it into the fully cocked position. The revolver properly breaks down by removing the barrel wedge, and the barrel to frame has just a bit of wobble, with no signs of adjustment in the past. The bore is in very good condition, showing clear lands and grooves with a mostly bright finish. There is some wear and past fouling, now removed, but no major issues, and the "progressive" rifling is still easily visible. Definitely well above average for a black powder era bore. All of the cap nipples look to be original and five of the six are clear, showing wear and oxidation to the exterior. There looks to be a piece of metal stuck in the plugged cone.

This is a lovely '49 Pocket dating from the late Civil War with a nice honest used look and a great bore. A wonderful acquisition for any collection!
