Original U.S. Civil War Colt M1849 Pocket Percussion Revolver made in 1863 - Serial 227532
Item Description
Original Item: Only One Available. The Colt "Pocket Percussion" Model 1849 revolvers in .31cal are essentially scaled down versions of the larger Navy Model 1851 in .36cal, and were developed concurrently. The serial Number 227532 can be found on the grip, trigger guard, frame, cylinder, and the loading rammer, which indicates the year of manufacture as 1863, meaning this Colt revolver falls right into the U.S. Civil War. The barrel however has serial number 221809, which was produced in 1862, a wartime arsenal replacement. They even swapped in the original loading rammer.
Six shot percussion, .31 caliber with a short 4" barrel, most numbers matching. The revolver is worn overall, but there is still the frame marking of COLT'S PATENT. The Colt address is still well marked in a line across the top of the octagonal barrel -

The condition is nice but the Stage Coach scene on the cylinder is mostly gone. The finish is a nice worn blue, giving it a lovely grayish patina. The brass trigger guard and grip frame actually still have a good amount of their original nickel plating, something we almost never see. The walnut grips are in good shape, with a lovely color and the expected patina of age. They still have almost all of the original "Piano Varnish" finish that was applied to these at the factory. The revolver cycles well, with a very crisp action and firm cylinder lockup.
This is a very nice '49 Pocket dating from the Civil War and is as tight as a drum; a wonderful acquisition for any collection.
