Original U.S. Civil War Colt M1849 Pocket Percussion Revolver made in 1862 with Period Holster - Serial 209383

Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. The colt "Pocket Percussion" Model 1849 revolvers in .31cal are essentially scaled down versions of the larger Navy Model 1851 in .36cal, and were developed concurrently. The serial Number 209383 can be found on the barrel, frame, trigger guard and grip frame. The loading rammer, cylinder, and barrel wedge all have a shortened version of this number, making this a very nice "ALL MATCHING" revolver, totally unmessed with, and it's a nice one.

The serial number indicates indicates the year of manufacture as 1859, just before the U.S. Civil War, so it almost certainly saw service during the conflict. As this revolver has a serial number over 187000, it has a six round .31 caliber cylinder, instead of the usual five. It also features a 5" barrel, and is in nice tight condition with nice aged finish on the steel. There is also most of the original cylinder "Stagecoach Holdup Scene" engraving visible, along with a clear COLT'S PATENT over the serial number marking. This marking is also present on the side of the frame. The barrel has some wear, and looks to have been resurfaced, so unfortunately the original address marking on the top is completely gone.

The walnut grips are in very good shape, with a lovely color and the expected patina of age. They still have most of the original "Piano Varnish" finish that was applied to these at the factory. The revolver functions well, with a crisp action and good cylinder indexing and lockup. The trigger is well adjusted and there is no issues with dry firing. There is a bit of wiggle in the frame/cylinder connection, as there is a crack on the bottom of the cylinder axis pin where it is drilled through for the barrel wedge. The bore shows clear lands and grooves, with a bright finish on the lands, while there is some oxidation and fouling in the bores.

The revolver comes with a very nice period flap holster, which originally had a lovely black patent leather finish, now checked and flaking in areas. It has a lovely matured patina, and fits the revolver perfectly.

This is a very nice '49 Pocket dating from the early Civil War, a wonderful acquisition for any collection. Complete with holster and ready to display!
