The Colt "Pocket Percussion" Model 1849 revolvers in .31cal are essentially scaled down versions of the larger Navy Model 1851 in .36cal, and were developed concurrently. The serial Number 192873 can be found on the barrel, frame, cylinder, trigger guard, and grip frame. The barrel wedge and loading rammer look to be unmarked arsenal replacements, and there is no marking on the arbor pin due to wear, however we are fairly certain it is original. The wooden grip looks to be a period replacement, and is in excellent condition.

The serial number indicates indicates the year of manufacture as 1861, during the middle of the U.S. Civil War, so it almost certainly saw service during the conflict. As this revolver has a serial number over 187000, it has a six round .31 caliber cylinder, instead of the previous five. It also features a 4" barrel, and is in nice tight condition with nice aged peppered finish on the steel, showing long use in service. As with most we see, the "Stagecoach Robbery" cylinder scene is almost completely removed, with just a bit of the "wheels" left. The COLT'S PATENT marking is however still partly intact intact. Often we see these with the markings completely removed from the cylinder, so this is a real treat!

The Colt New York single line address is still present on the top of the octagonal barrel, however the first word is mostly worn away:-

It also has the correct COLTS PATENT on the left frame under the cylinder, though there is no "31CAL" marking on the trigger guard, which is not uncommon. The replacement walnut grips are excellent, with a lovely finish and just a bit of pressure denting in areas.

The revolver functions just about flawlessly, with solid indexing and a firm cylinder lockup. We did not notice any of the usual finicky behavior we often see with revolvers of this age. The barrel to frame connection is solid, with no wobble we can detect, however there is a brass shim in the wedge slot, so it has been adjusted a bit.

The bore is in good condition, with a partly bright finish showing clear lands and grooves. There is oxidation and fouling present, especially close to the muzzle, but this is really a very good bore for a percussion revolver. The brass front sight is still present and in very good condition. All 6 cap nipple cones are intact, though they do show some oxidation and powder burn to the exterior.

This is a very nice '49 Pocket dating from the Civil War, a very nice acquisition for any collection. In very nice service used condition with a lovely patina, ready to display!
