Item Description
Original Item: Only One Available. This is the finest Colt M1849 Pocket Percussion Revolver that we have seen in some time, and definitely the best we have ever offered for sale. Aside from the rare 6" barrel, the cylinder scene is COMPLETE, something that just isn't seen. We acquired it from of an old collection assembled in the 1960's, and has been in storage ever since.
The colt "Pocket Percussion" Model 1849 revolvers in .31cal are essentially scaled down versions of the larger Navy Model 1851 in .36cal, and were developed concurrently. The serial Number 237187 can be found on all major parts and indicates the year of manufacture as 1863, meaning this Colt revolver falls right into the U.S. Civil War. All major components show clear serial number, including the barrel and loading lever, which have a shortened number.
Six shot percussion, .31 caliber with a special order 6" barrel, with all serial numbers matching. In nice tight condition with an excellent finish throughout. A lot of the original case hardening can still be seen. Brass trigger guard and grip frame is marked is marked .31cal, and there are even traces of the original nickel plating on parts.
Most importantly, the original "Stagecoach Robbery" cylinder engraving can still be seen, and is almost completely intact! The COLT'S PATENT marking is intact as well, and the engraving throughout the cylinder is crisp. Appears to be in perfect functioning condition and is nicely marked in a line across the top of the octagonal barrel-
The walnut grips are in very good shape, with probably over 90% of the original piano varnish still present, giving the grips a lovely orange color. The revolver is tight with firm lock-up and the action functions flawlessly.
This is an excellent '49 Pocket dating from the Civil War and is as tight as a drum; a wonderful acquisition for any collection. If you you were waiting for a truly choice example, this is the one!
