  • Original Item: Only One Available. The colt "Pocket Percussion" Model 1849 revolvers in .31cal are essentially scaled down versions of the larger Navy Model 1851 in .36cal, and were developed concurrently. The serial Number 246931 can be found on the barrel, frame, trigger guard, and grip frame. The cylinder and barrel wedge bear shortened number 46931, while the cylinder arbor pin is marked 6931. That makes this a very desirable "ALL MATCHING" example, with no parts swapped out!

The serial number indicates indicates the year of manufacture as 1863, right in the middle of the U.S. Civil War, so it almost certainly saw service during the conflict. As this revolver has a serial number over 187000, it has a six round .31 caliber cylinder, instead of the previous five. It features a long 6" barrel, in nice tight condition with nice aged finish on the steel, which does not show any major powder burn or corrosion. There are traces of the original cylinder "Stagecoach Holdup Scene" engraving and "COLT'S PATENT" over the serial number, but wear has degraded the markings a bit.

The Colt later production single address is still fully legible across the top of the octagonal barrel -

ADDRESS. COL. SAML COLT NEW-YORK U.S. AMERICA

There is also a clear COLTS PATENT marking correctly on the left side of the frame under the cylinder. The walnut grips are in very good shape, with a lovely color and the expected patina of age. They have however lost all of the original "Piano varnish" finish due to wear and cleaning.

The revolver functions, but it is somewhat finicky due to wear on the cylinder ratchet and "hand" of the action. It often has to have the cylinder rotated by hand, and definitely works better with the revolver pointed downward. The bore shows worn lands and grooves, with a partly bright finish showing some past oxidation and wear. We checked the cylinder, and most of the cap nipples are clear, and look to be original.

This is a very nice '49 Pocket dating from the Civil War, a wonderful acquisition for any collection.
